History

We were among the first enthusiasts of the breed when it was first introduced to the UK, Both already successful in other breeds and at the time not realising that it was to totally dominate our lives in the future. Although reasonably successful in the early days, it was probably five years before the Redwitch Kennel established itself with a recognized type and this only after tremendous help and advice from American breeders, many of whom have since become very close and special friends and who must take some credit for our success.

Since the arrival to our kennel of Ch/Am Ch. Goshens Heir Apparent at Redwitch in 1989, the Redwitch name has totally dominated the Akita show scene in the UK. Not only was “Prince” a superb show dog, but has proved to be a phenomenal stud dog, and still the most dominant sire to date. In 1991, he won the Dog Challenge Certificate (CC) and Best of Breed at Crufts with his stablemate Ch Zee Zee Flash, bred by David, taking the Bitch CC and Best Opposite Sex.

Over the next few years, two more of our American imports dominated the breed in the form of Ch. Goshens Dark’n’Debonaire at Redwitch (Am Ch. Goshens Charriots of Fire X Am. Ch Goshens Dressed Ta Kill) and Ch. Goshens Bigger is Better at Redwitch (Am.Ch. Karma Ki’s the Royal Sting X Goshens Fire Dancer).Dark’n’Debonaire also took Best of Breed at Crufts, this being in 1993. He was also only the second Akita ever to win Best In Show at a General Championship Show in the UK at Manchester in 1993.When he was bred to Lizda Zee Zee Flash (Am.Ch. the Real McCoy O’Bj X Overhills Marlows Miracle), He sired a puppy who was to become the most successful Akita in breed history in the UK to date.

Bigger is Better, “ Digger “, dominated the ring for three years, winning Best of Breed at Crufts 1994 and 1995 and Best Opposite Sex in 1996 to his daughter, who went on to become the first Akita to win a Group at Crufts in 1996, a win she repeated in 1997. He is still to date a prolific sire with many top winning Champion offspring.

Although, with out a doubt, the pick of the litter, we had promised him to a breeder in Norway, so at twelve weeks, Redwitch Dancin' in the Dark was exported to begin an exciting show career over there. Even as a puppy, he was turning heads, taking Best in Shows at all breed Championship Shows under many respected judges, including some from the UK, and it was through one of these that we first took steps to bring him back.

Rave returned home after six months quarantine and made his show debut at Southern Counties in June 1996, where he took the Dog CC, Best of Breed and Group 1. He took his title in three straight shows and one month later his first all breed Best in Show award from over 10,000 dogs.

A phenomenal start to a show career which was to see him amass 30 CC’s, six Best in Shows and three Reserve Best in Show at all Breed Championship Shows, fourteen group 1’s, fourteen other Group placements, two Best in show at group shows, one Best in Show at a breed show and finishing the number two dog all breed 1997 and number five dog all breed in 1998.

After an exciting Crufts, 1998, which saw Rave take Best of Breed and a Group 2, it was 1999 to prove to be his day. After winning Best of Breed he also won his Group. In the Best in Show judging he was the Reserve Best in Show, without a doubt a tremendous achievement.

Following Rave's successes, a litter was born in Sept 1998 sired by his son Rave On and out of his daughter In Your Dreams. From this litter we kept two puppies who themselves were to go down in Akita history.
Ch. Redwitch Feel Free To Stare finished his first year in the show ring as Top Akita Puppy, he took his title the following year and then went on to be the most prolific sire the breed has known to date. In 2002 he was the Top Stud Dog All Breeds at the tender age of 4 years. Not to be outdone his sister Ch. Redwitch Stare If You Dare is currently the Top Winning Akita Bitch All Time. She whelped her first litter of 4 puppies in 2001, all of which are now champions.
 

In 2003 our close friend Arlene Clure became a Partner in Redwitch and hopefully together we will continue with our commitment to breed the very best.
